With this most precious of fibers we can just about make anything of our lives. We can build success and fortune with it. My friend, life’s a story, stayed tuned for more on This Passing Day.
Time. Probably the most precious gift that we possess yet it’s the one thing most taken for granted in life’s incessant drive to waste it, squander it, kill it, and lose it. It’s the one thing we are most jealous about owning, yet it’s so fleeting that the moment we grasp it is the moment it is lost. We beg for more of it like a second helping, the first helping having grown cold and useless because we did not consume it when it was hot and ready to sustain us. We treat is like a slow moving ox, switching it with our petty wants and finally whipping it angrily with our fears because it moves too slow for our ambitions. Yet, we whine and complain when our destination is reached and we are not ready nor willing to accept where it has led us. We are often convicted to take time, but are seldom willing to return it.
Here’s a thought from Arnold Bennet: “Time is the inexplicable raw material of everything. With it, all is possible; with- out it, nothing. You wake up in the morning and your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours of the unmanufactured tissue of the universe of your life! It’s yours. No one receives more or less than you receive. You can waste the passing moment. But you can’t waste tomorrow; it’s kept for you. You can’t waste the next hour; it’s kept for you. You have to live on this twenty-four hours of daily time. Its right use, its most effective use, is a matter of the highest urgency and of the most thrilling actuality. All depends on that. Your happiness depends on that. Time is yours to manage, all 24 hours of it. You will never have any more time. We have all the time there is.” (Arnold Bennett, Bits & Pieces, March 4, 1993, p. 18-20.)
“The unmanufactured tissue of the universe!” With this most precious of fibers we can just about make anything of our lives. We can build success and fortune with it. We can capture happiness and understanding with its strong cords. Time does more than fly; it walks, runs, climbs, crawls, and it even stands still every once and a while. Time is real stuff! It’s not an abstract concept. It’s as real as the oatmeal in your bowl or the steak on your plate. Time is a commodity that God measures, applies and uses. It is a daily gift of possibilities and potentials that should never be taken for granted. Now is the only time that you own. It is there but for a moment; be thankful for it and be sure you use it.
We pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of time. As we enter into a brand new year help us to rediscover the importance of one of the greatest gifts you have ever given to us, time. May we always use ours wisely, always keeping in mind that each hour, minute and second is a precious thing that is signularly ours and will never return again. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matt 6:34)
