Getting up a load?

Knowing what God means when He says our days are numbered and “each man’s life is but a breath”, is critical to understanding the importance of time. My friend, life’s a story, stayed tuned for more on This Passing Day.

Time. We know that it is limited and that with each passing moment we have used up another chunk of it. Yet most of us have a difficult time putting the nature of time into a meaningful perspective. Yesterday, today and tomorrow are links in a chain that join us to eternity. Each link cast pulls us one step closer to eternal life in heaven. But, since eternity itself is such a difficult concept to understand, our typical response is: “Eternity is a good thing, just don’t start it today because I really am too busy right now.” We just can’t see what’s at the end of our length of chain. Squinting down the road at the future makes most of us pretty uncomfortable.

Here’s a story: “Should Jesus were to come today.” Pastor Smith spoke slowly. “How many of you would be ready to be with Jesus today if this is your last day on earth. I want to see a show of hands.” Slowly, first one, then another hand was raised. Finally every hand was raised from the front of the worship hall to the back. The pastor shook his head knowingly as he raised his eyes to the balcony in expectation of a unanimous vote on the part of his congregation. Every hand was raised but one. There sat a little boy who resolutely refused to join the rest of the congregation. The pastor focused his gaze intently on the little boys spot. “Son, don’t you want to go to heaven with the rest of your family?” The little boy smiled and rose to respond to the pastor. “Sorry pastor.” He said. “I sure do want to go to heaven. But I thought that you were lookin’ to get a load up right now.” (Adapted from James Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited)

Having a good idea of what God means when He says that our days are numbered and “each man’s life is but a breath” (Psalm 39:5), is critical to our understanding of the importance of time. That little boy, cute as he was, is typical of many believers. We’re always willing to think about heaven tomorrow; but the thought of heaven right now is a bit intimidating. That’s why it’s so important to understand time as a valuable asset on loan from above. And someday that loan will be recalled. Perhaps God is planning to “get a load up” right now. Are you ready to get on board? A ticket to heaven is non-refundable and there are no rainchecks.

We pray. Heavenly Father, our time here on earth is limited. It might be no more than a day or a year. We are thankful that you haven’t shared that secret with us, but are concerned that we may have wasted or squandered our time unnecessarily as time has and is passing us. Teach us to number our days, always with the thought in mind that you have them numbered. Help us to seize the moment to do your will before one moment becomes the last moment. . In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matt 6:34)
