Tail up and safe?

My friend, may I ask you a question? Lust is messy and we don’t want to look at it. But since It can easily litter our lives, as people and events touch us every day, is not looking an option?

My friend, life’s a story, welcome to This Passing Day. I’m Mark Brunner.

The rut is over and there’ve been thousands of hunters out in the woods and fields flushing the deer. Even fences along the highways don’t stop them. In their panic to get away they get IN the way of cars and trucks. Despite the fact that the D.O.T. is tasked with removing roadkill as soon as possible, sheer numbers make that impossible. I don’t like looking at roadkill. When I see it by the side of the road I purposely look away from it. I know that it’s roadkill, but I find myself hoping that each time I pass a bloated form, tomorrow it will be gone and I can forget about it. The problem is there will always be roadkill, as the highways will continue to be dangerous places for wild animals. So, the sight of their carcasses on and near the road won’t go away, and not looking at them won’t make a difference.

You know, lust is like that. It’s messy and we don’t want to look at it. It can easily litter our lives as people and events touch us every day. Choosing not to look isn’t an option. Not wrecking in the first place is.

Here’s a thought from Richard Exley. “Lust is not the result of an overactive sex drive; it is not a biological phenomenon or the by-product of our glands. If it were, then it could be satisfied with a sexual experience, like a glass of water quenches thirst or a good meal satisfies appetite. But the more we attempt to appease our lust, the more demanding it becomes. There is simply not enough erotica in the world to satisfy lust's insatiable appetite. When we deny our lustful obsessions, we are not repressing a legitimate drive. We are putting to death an aberration. Lust is to the gift of sex what cancer is to a normal cell. Therefore, we deny it, not in order to become sexless saints, but in order to be fully alive to God, which includes the full and uninhibited expression of our sexual being within the God-given context of marriage.” (Richard Exley.)

The Apostle Peter wrote in 1 Peter 4:1–2: “Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires. but rather for the will of God.” No one likes looking at the results of lustful living. It’s messy and we’re inclined to look away from it. However, when we do the mess won’t vanish by ignoring it. Although lust will happen and Jesus will always be there to help us clean up the mess, there is a better way. Put lust to death in your life, looking it squarely in the face and declaring that our life’s path is going to be cleaner, safer and less awful to look at in the future. A deer running free in the field, tail up and safe is a sight to behold. Make this your vision, not the roadkill of lust.

We pray. Heavenly Father, thank you Lord for the gift of sex in our lives. Help us father to always keep our lives free of the roadkill of lust, always giving our lives full room for the uninhibited expression of our sexual selves. Forgive us when we allow lust into our lives messing up our relationships and causing us to look away from your blessings. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. Thank you for tuning into This Passing Day.
