Overeager?

January 18, 2018

My friend, may I ask you a question? How eager are you to do the Lord’s work? Why wouldn’t you? The question is, are you too eager to be lifted up on eagle’s wings when God would prefer your feet be firmly anchored on the ground?

My friend, life's a story, welcome to This Passing Day. I'm Mark Brunner.

I’ve experienced a few failures among the successes in my career. No-one usually wishes to admit that, but it is the truth. I’ve not performed as hoped or promised at times. Whether due to overcommitment, lack of sufficient motivation or just plain inability, I’ve not performed every job in my life successfully. Time commitment is usually due to my personal misjudgment of hours in the day. Motivation is normally a factor of a job description that didn’t match the work. Inability, however, is a different matter. One would hope that it’s sufficiently measured prior to taking on a job? Should be, but isn’t always the case. One job failure in particular comes to mind for me where I was so motivated to work for a certain individual because he was a good friend and very talented that I took the job due to a spirit of overeagerness. I was so anxious to work for him that I failed to measure the fact that I truly wasn’t sufficiently qualified to do the work involved. Regrettably, I let myself and my friend down. He should have hired someone else.

How eager are you to do the Lord’s work? If you love the Lord, really care about the message of the gospel and your heart aches for those who don’t know their Savior Jesus Christ, why wouldn’t you be eager? The question is, are you too eager to be lifted up on eagle’s wings when God would prefer your feet be firmly anchored on the ground?

Here’s a thought: “It’s been said that if every employee of a company wished to soar like an eagle, most of the work needing to be done would be overlooked. The fact is that most employees who think they are lifted up on eagles wings are, in reality, soaring along with a congregation of crows. Without an eagle’s perspective no-one spots the small stuff that makes a company run efficiently.” (Unknown.)

Mark 9:28-29 records these words of our Savior. “After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by prayer.’” Jesus’ frustrated and embarrassed disciples had been soaring like eagles as they met this possessing demon in battle. Unfortunately, as Jesus pointed out to them, although they may have had an “eagle’s wings” experience, they and the possessed boy would have been far better served had they landed and done the grunt work, diligent and humble prayer, this work required. Truly, if they had been flying like eagles they would have seen this, but it’s more likely they lacked the long-distance, spiritual perspective of an eagle, and they were just flying high. The “power of the saint” according Oswald Chambers, is indeed the ability to be lifted up but even more importantly to land when the call of God beckons us to the priority of prayer.

We pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to do Kingdom work in the name of Jesus Christ. Forgive us Lord when we become overeager to serve our Lord and daily to do the diligent prayer work required before the a hurting saint can be healed by our words and our touch. Remind us Lord to come down from our soaring and labor where it counts. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
