Be handy?

February 12, 2018

My friend, may I ask you a question? Specialists are great to have, especially when you have a special job to do. What about God? Is he looking for specialists to do a special job of winning souls for Christ? Or, is he in the market for a whole bunch of generalists.

My friend, life's a story, welcome to This Passing Day. I'm Mark Brunner.

We live in a very specialized world. Plumbers fix plumbing, but don’t call them to install an irrigation system in your front yard. That requires a specialist. A carpenter can install a cabinet in your house, but don’t call him to make it. That normally requires a cabinetmaker. The list of examples is long. Electricians that specialize in service boxes but not electrical appliance repair; mechanics that fix cars but not trucks and printers comfortable printing brochures but not catalogs. Much has changed since days gone by when generalists were the rule and specialists were hard to find. Ultimately, because we live in a very specialized world, finding a specialist to do what needs to be done is fairly simple. Cruise the Internet for a few minutes and you will find someone to do whatever it is you wish to have done. Heaven help you though if you’re looking for a handyman who does lots of things well. These are hard to find as hens teeth in a world in love with specialization.

Oswald Chambers writes. “. . .  are you there as a laborer to reap the harvest for Jesus Christ? Is your response, ‘Oh, but I have a special work to do!’ No Christian has a special work to do. A Christian is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, ‘a servant [who] is not greater than his master’ (John 13:16), and someone who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls us to no special work— He calls us to Himself. ‘Pray the Lord of the harvest,’ and He will engineer your circumstances to send you out as His laborer..’”  (My Utmost For His Highest, October 16.)

God isn’t looking for specialists who do one thing, he’s looking for spiritual handymen like you and me ready to report for duty to do whatever the Spirit of God calls us to do. His calls for us to do aren’t based on our abilities, but on his will to have the work done. When I finally do find a handyman here at Beech Springs to do a variety of simple work that needs to be done inside and around the house, I know I will get a broad range of work done, at a price I can afford, at a level of quality I had in mind, and in tune and in time with what I planned. That’s how God uses us; his wisdom, his plan, his will and our raw, handyman willingness to tackle anything that just needs to get done. It’s better just to be ready to work and, respecting God as the Boss, show up and work hard at whatever he wills needs to get done. Be handy.

We pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for calling us to the work of winning souls for Christ. There are many jobs to be done so the work is never ending. Remind us daily Lord that we don’t specialize in this work, we are handy at doing it as long as you’re the Boss. Forgive us Lord when we wait around for just the right job to suit what we feel are our skills. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.

If you have a special prayer request, please send your request to "This Passing Day!"  <>  God bless   you for Jesus sake.
