My friend, may I ask you a question? Has marriage become tedious? Or, is it that many couples just don’t have the staying power they used to have? If we are persistent in our faith, will we be enduring in God’s presence; even if we just don’t have much in the way of abilities?
My friend, life’s a story, welcome to This Passing Day. I'm Mark Brunner.
I ran across some sobering statistics recently indicating that ten years ago for every wife who left her family, 600 husbands did. Today, however, for each man who leaves, two women do. Women, so persistent in marriage at one time, have now become the least likely to endure hardship than the man; a total reversal of what had been the norm only a short time ago.
Has marriage become so tedious? Or, is it that many couples just don’t have the staying power they used to have?
Here’s a story: In 1972, NASA launched the space probe Pioneer 10. The satellite’s primary mission was to reach Jupiter, photograph the planet and its moons, and beam data to earth. Scientists regarded this as a bold plan, for at that time no earth satellite had ever gone beyond Mars and they feared the asteroid belt would destroy the satellite before it could reach its target. But Pioneer 10 accomplished its mission and much, much more. Jupiter’s immense gravity hurled Pioneer 10 at a higher rate of speed toward the edge of the solar system. At some two billion miles, it hurtled past Uranus; Neptune at nearly three billion; Pluto at almost four. By 1997, twenty-five years after its launch, Pioneer 10 was more than six billion miles from the sun. And despite that immense distance, it continued to beam back radio signals to Earth. Perhaps most remarkable, those signals emanate from an 8-watt transmitter, which radiates about as much power as a bedroom night light, and takes more than nine hours to reach Earth. (Craig Brian Larson, Pastoral Grit, Bethany.)
So it is when we offer ourselves to serve the Lord and stick out the hard times. God works through us and tempers our problems even though we might be someone with only “8-watt abilities.” God cannot work, however, through someone who quits. It’s easy to become tired and discouraged when you have to endure hurt and pain, over and over again. And there always seems to come a time when you’ve just had enough. Yet, a Christian can find comfort in this, our weakness is God’s strength. If we are persistent in our faith, He will be enduring in His presence; our 8 watt ability–His everlasting perfection.
We pray. Lord, give us the strength to stick it out over the long haul—not the grim strength of gritting our teeth but the glory-strength you give us. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking you Father for making us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that You have for us. Jesus, give us the strength in our weaknesses. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
